Infinity Router Bits — and the Amazon Alternative

Infinity sells direct and their bits are excellent. Freud's 13-piece Super Bit set is the Amazon answer for covering the common profiles at once.

Infinity Cutting Tools sells its router bits direct through infinitytools.com. They have a strong reputation, particularly for their spiral and specialty cutters, and ordering from them is straightforward. This page covers the Amazon alternative and, more usefully, how to think about buying bits at all.

Sets versus singles

The honest position on router bit sets is that they are a reasonable way to start and a poor way to continue.

A set gets you the common profiles at a lower cost per bit than buying them individually, and it means the profile you need at 9pm on a Sunday is in the box. That is worth real money when you are starting out.

What happens afterwards is that three bits — usually a straight bit, a flush trim and a round over — do ninety percent of the work and wear out, while the ogee and the dovetail stay factory-sharp for a decade. From that point, buying the specific bit you need, in the best quality you can afford, beats buying another set.

Shank size is not a detail

A 1/2 in shank has four times the cross-sectional area of a 1/4 in shank. It deflects less, chatters less and runs cooler, and the difference is clearly visible in the cut on anything larger than a small round over.

Buy 1/2 in whenever your router will take it. The catch: compact and trim routers take 1/4 in only, so if that is your router, this set will not fit it.

What actually makes a bit good

Carbide grade and grind quality, neither of which is visible in a listing. The practical proxies: brands that grind their own carbide rather than assembling bought-in cutters, and bits that arrive with a visibly polished rather than rough-ground flute face.

Also worth knowing: a bit that is “blunt” is often just resinous. Clean the carbide with resin remover before deciding it has had its day — a surprising proportion of dull bits come back to life.

Storage

Carbide is brittle. Bits rattling loose in a drawer chip each other’s edges, and a chipped edge is not repairable at home. A block of drilled scrap costs nothing and will do more for a set’s working life than anything else on this page.

What works

  • Covers the profiles almost every project needs — straight, flush trim, chamfer, round over, dovetail — in one purchase rather than a dozen
  • 1/2 in shanks throughout, which deflect far less than 1/4 in and leave a cleaner cut in a table
  • Freud grind their own carbide and it holds up: these stay sharp through far more timber than a hardware-store set

What doesn't

  • Any starter set includes bits you will never fit, and the ones you use constantly will dull while the rest sit new
  • 1/2 in shanks will not fit a compact or trim router, so this is a set for a full-size router or a table
  • Bought as singles, a good bit in the exact profile you need is often the smarter purchase than a set
