Northwood Turning Tools — and the Amazon Alternative
Northwood is a value turning brand with limited distribution. For a first set of HSS tools on Amazon, Sorby is the safe answer.

Northwood is a value-focused turning tool brand whose distribution has always been patchy and regional. Rather than chase availability, the useful thing is to be clear about what separates a good turning set from a bad one, because the differences are few and they are not subtle.
Steel
High speed steel or carbon steel, and it matters for one specific reason: heat.
New turners grind tools badly and overheat them. Carbon steel that turns blue has lost its temper permanently and will not hold an edge again until you grind past the damage. HSS shrugs it off.
Any set worth buying says HSS. If a listing is vague about the steel, assume carbon.
Handles
Turning tools are controlled by leverage — the handle tucked under your forearm, against your body, with the tool rest as the fulcrum. A long handle gives you that. A short one means the tool can be twisted out of your control by a catch.
Sets sold with short handles are cheaper for a reason, and they are the wrong place to save.
Grind
A factory grind that is usable out of the box saves a beginner a genuinely difficult first hour. A set that arrives with a square-ended, unground gouge is asking you to learn grinding before you learn turning.
Which tools you will actually use
Roughing gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool, skew, scraper. That is the working set, and it is why a five or six piece set is the right size. Ten-piece sets pad the count with duplicates and speciality scrapers.
A bowl gouge is not in a spindle set and is a separate decision.
The carbide question
Carbide-insert tools are easier to start with: present the cutter flat, no bevel-riding technique, rotate the insert when it dulls. They produce a shape quickly and a surface that needs more sanding.
Traditional HSS tools, sharpened properly, leave a cut surface. That is the reason to learn them, and it is the reason a set like this is still the standard recommendation.
What works
- Genuine HSS survives being ground hot, which is the mistake every new turner makes repeatedly
- Full-length handles give the leverage to control a catch instead of being surprised by one
- Sorby grind their tools properly at the factory, so the set is usable before you own a grinder
What doesn't
- Any set includes tools you rarely use — the roughing gouge, spindle gouge and parting tool do most of the work
- Spindle-biased: a bowl gouge is a separate purchase whichever set you start with
- Costs several times a carbide-insert starter set, which is easier for a complete beginner to get results with
