Sculpfun S30 Pro Max Review: The Open-Frame Budget Pick
A 20W open-frame diode laser with automatic air assist and an expandable bed, for much less than an enclosed machine. What you give up for the price.

The S30 Pro Max is the machine that shows what an enclosure actually costs. It carries a 20W diode in the same class as the xTool S1 and the Falcon2 Pro S, on an open aluminium frame, for a fraction of their price. The laser is not what you are saving on. You are saving on everything around it.
What you get
Real air assist. A built-in pump blows air through the nozzle at the cut, which clears smoke from the beam path and stops the edges flaring. It is controlled by the machine, so LightBurn turns it on for cuts and off afterwards. Cheaper open frames often leave you to bolt on an aquarium pump and remember to switch it on.
A bed that grows. The stock work area is 410 x 400 mm. Sculpfun sells extension kits that take it to 935 x 905 mm. No enclosed diode does that. If your plan is house signs or full panels, this is the machine with room for them.
A steadier gantry. The X-axis runs on a linear rail rather than plastic wheels in an aluminium channel. That keeps the head steadier and the engraving crisper as the machine wears.
Sculpfun rates it at 10 mm plywood and 15 mm balsa in one pass. Treat those as best case.
What you give up
Eye safety becomes your job. It is a Class 4 laser with nothing between the beam and the room. Reflections off the bed are enough to damage eyes. Everyone present needs OD4+ goggles rated for the diode’s wavelength, every time. That is manageable in a shed. It is not manageable in a kitchen with kids walking through.
Smoke goes into the room. There is no box to extract from. Either it runs somewhere well ventilated, or you build or buy an enclosure and extraction. Budget for that, and the price gap with an enclosed machine narrows. See laser safety and ventilation.
You must stay with it. There is no camera and no flame detection. A diode laser on a slow cut can set wood alight, and on an open frame nothing stops it but you.
Software. Sculpfun’s own software is basic. Most owners run LightBurn, which is a paid licence, or the free LaserGRBL on Windows.
Verdict
As a laser, the S30 Pro Max is excellent value. As a household appliance, it is the wrong shape. Buy it for a dedicated space. Otherwise buy an enclosed machine.
What works
- The same 20W diode class as enclosed machines, at a fraction of their price
- Air assist switches on and off automatically from LightBurn, so you are not leaving a pump running between jobs
- The 410 x 400 mm bed expands with extension kits to 935 x 905 mm, which no enclosed diode can do
- Linear rail on the X-axis keeps the head steadier than the V-wheel gantries on cheaper open frames
What doesn't
- Class 4 and open: everyone in the room needs OD4+ laser goggles, every time it runs
- No enclosure, so smoke goes straight into the room unless you build an extraction hood
- No camera and no flame detection - you have to stay with it while it runs
- Assembly takes over an hour, and Sculpfun's own software is weak, so plan on buying LightBurn
