Snap-On 21-Degree Framing Nailer: Discontinued — What to Buy Instead

A tool-truck framing nailer, rebadged and long discontinued. The collation angle is the thing to carry across.

Snap-On sold pneumatic nailers through its tool truck channel, manufactured by specialist makers and badged. The 21 degree framing nailer is discontinued and was never supported long-term.

Buy the same collation angle

This is the decision that matters, because it determines what nails you can buy for the rest of the tool’s life.

A 21 degree nailer takes plastic-collated, full round head nails. Full round head is what many building codes require for structural framing, and it is the reason this angle persists despite the plastic fragments it throws when firing.

If you already have boxes of 21 degree nails, buy a 21 degree tool. Changing angle means writing off that stock.

The Metabo HPT NR83A5, linked below, is a current 21 degree plastic collated framing nailer driving 2 in to 3-1/4 in nails.

Features worth having now

Selectable trigger. Bump fire for speed on sheathing, sequential fire for placement accuracy and for sites that require it. A tool locked to bump fire is a liability on finish-adjacent work.

Tool-less depth adjustment. Nail depth varies with timber density and with air pressure. A dial means you correct it; a spanner means you live with it.

Rafter hook. Sounds trivial until you are on a roof.

Parts for the old one

If the Snap-On tool is otherwise sound, identify the original manufacturer by the castings and look for a rebuild kit for the equivalent model. Pneumatic nailers almost always fail through perished O-rings and a worn driver blade, and both are replaceable parts.

Worth doing before replacing — a framing nailer is a simple machine and the metal in it long outlives the rubber.
