Veritas toolbox ends are cast hardware from Lee Valley — shaped end pieces that a traditional toolbox or tote is built around. Lee Valley sells Veritas direct, not through Amazon.
What makes a toolbox worth having
Most people build one too big. A toolbox sized to hold everything is a toolbox too heavy to carry, and it ends up as a chest that lives on the floor.
The traditional carpenter’s tote is deliberately small: long enough for a saw or a square, shallow enough that everything in it is visible at once, with a handle you can get a whole hand around. The constraint is the point — it forces you to carry the tools for the job rather than all of them.
Three details separate a good one:
The handle height. Too low and your knuckles hit the tools. A handle raised on end pieces, which is exactly what cast ends give you, clears the contents.
Weight before contents. Thick stock feels reassuring and is the thing you will curse. 12mm sides are plenty for a tote.
A flat bottom that stays flat. Ply is genuinely better than solid timber here, because it will not cup and will not split across its width when you screw it down.
Wood movement, briefly
If you build a toolbox from solid timber, remember the sides move across their width with the seasons and the bottom does too, in the same direction if you orient them the same way. Screwing a solid bottom rigidly to solid sides across the grain is how a box splits. Either use ply for the bottom, or fix it so it can move.
What to buy
The unfinished wood tool box and garden tote kit, linked below, is the shortcut: pre-cut parts that assemble into a traditional open tote, ready for paint or oil. It is light-duty and honest about it — a tote for hand tools and garden gear, not a site box.
If you want Veritas hardware specifically, order it from Lee Valley and build the box around it. That is a better object and a longer project.
What works
- Pre-cut parts remove the joinery from the job, so it is an evening rather than a weekend
- Unfinished timber takes paint, stain or oil, and the open tote design suits hand tools well
- Cheap enough to treat as a beginner project or a gift build without worrying about the material cost
What doesn't
- Light construction — this is a tote for hand tools, not a box you would fill with cast iron planes and carry far
