Vac-Clamp VC4 Review
An Australian vacuum clamping system sold direct. How vacuum workholding works, and the Amazon-available alternative.

Vac-Clamp is an Australian vacuum clamping system: a pump, a reservoir and clamping pads or a bleed-board that hold a workpiece by atmospheric pressure. It is sold direct by the manufacturer. There is no Amazon listing, and there is no equivalent vacuum system on Amazon that I would claim is the same thing.
What vacuum clamping actually gives you
One thing, and it is genuinely valuable: the entire top face and all four edges are clear.
Every mechanical clamp puts something in the way. Vacuum puts nothing above the work surface, which is why it dominates in CNC routing and vacuum veneer pressing. If you are routing a pattern across a whole panel, sanding a face flat, or thicknessing something too thin to grip, that clearance is not a convenience — it is what makes the operation possible at all.
The physics, and its limit
Atmospheric pressure is about 100 kPa. A perfect vacuum over a 300 x 300mm pad gives roughly 9 kN of holding force, which is a great deal. But the force acts perpendicular to the surface only. Vacuum resists lifting extremely well and resists sliding only through friction. A hard sideways knock from a router bit can shift a vacuum-held part in a way it never would a screwed-down one.
It also needs a non-porous surface. Open-grained or rough-sawn timber leaks, and a leaking part is a part that is not held.
The honest alternative
If you want the clear-top-face benefit without a pump, holdfasts do it mechanically. A holdfast drops into a hole in the bench and jams under a hammer tap, gripping through friction on the shaft. Nothing projects sideways, and the tool clears the work.
The POWERTEC holdfast clamps, linked below, are the plain version: cast steel, 3/4in shaft, no mechanism to fail. They need 3/4in dog holes in the bench, which is the real cost — but a bench with dog holes is more useful in a dozen other ways.
Which to choose
For CNC work, veneering, or holding thin and awkward parts across their whole face, the vacuum system is the right tool and buying direct from Vac-Clamp is the way to get it.
For everything a hand-tool woodworker does at a bench, holdfasts do the job for a tiny fraction of the money and never need a pump running.
What works
- Holds from above with nothing under the workpiece, so a router or sander can cross the whole face
- Cast steel with no moving parts to seize, adjust or lose
- Releases with a tap, which matters when you are repositioning a part fifty times
What doesn't
- Requires 3/4in dog holes drilled in the bench, which is a commitment if your bench does not have them
