Four first sewing machines: the default, the budget one, the one for denim and canvas, and the buy-once machine. Why stitch count matters least.

Our pick · Best Overall
Brother CS7000X Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine
Who it's for: Most beginners. Especially anyone who might try quilting, since the walking foot and wide table are already in the box.

The short answer
- 1 Best Overall: Brother CS7000X Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine
- 2 Best Budget: Brother XM2701 Lightweight Sewing Machine
- 3 Best for Denim and Canvas: SINGER Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machine
- 4 Best Buy-Once Machine: Janome HD3000 Heavy-Duty Sewing Machine with Hard Case
Stitch count is the least useful number on a sewing machine box. A beginner uses straight stitch, zigzag and a buttonhole. The 70th decorative stitch matters far less than how easily the machine threads, how it handles the fabric you plan to use, and whether a buttonhole takes one step or four.
Choosing between them
- Most beginners: the Brother CS7000X.
- Not sure sewing will stick: the Brother XM2701.
- Jeans, bags and canvas: the Singer 4423.
- One solid machine, no extras needed: the Janome HD3000.
What to skip
Avoid very cheap “mini” machines sold as kids’ or travel machines. They are hard to keep in tension and frustrate new sewists more than they help. If money is tight, the XM2701 is a better place to stop.
Next steps
Want to quilt? Pair the machine with the quilting starter kit. Want neat, finished seams on clothing later? That is what a serger is for. It comes after a sewing machine, not instead of one.
Brother
CS7000X Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine
A computerized machine that removes the fiddly parts of starting out: automatic needle threading, an LCD to pick stitches, and seven one-step buttonholes. It comes with ten feet, including a walking foot, and a detachable wide table for quilting.
- Who it suits
- Most beginners. Especially anyone who might try quilting, since the walking foot and wide table are already in the box.
- What it does well
- Easy threading and stitch selection, buttonholes in one step, and quilting accessories other starter machines charge extra for.
- The trade-off
- It is a light machine. It handles a pair of jeans hems, but repeated thick seams in heavy denim or canvas are not its strength.

What else you'll need
- SCHMETZ Universal Sewing Machine Needles, 30-needle assortment — a needle for each fabric weight; change it every project or two
- Gutermann Sew-All Thread Set, 20 spools — everyday colors so the first project can start the day the machine arrives
- Clover Wonder Clips, 50 pack — easier than pins for a beginner, and they will not prick
Brother
XM2701 Lightweight Sewing Machine
A mechanical machine with 27 stitches, a one-step buttonhole and an automatic needle threader. It is light enough to put away after each use, and it costs much less than the CS7000X.
- Who it suits
- Someone who is not sure sewing will stick, or who mostly mends, hems and makes simple projects.
- What it does well
- The basics, simply: straight and zigzag stitch, buttonholes, and a dial instead of menus.
- The trade-off
- No speed limiter and no needle up/down button, which help nervous beginners. Most people who keep sewing outgrow it.

What else you'll need
- SCHMETZ Universal Sewing Machine Needles, 30-needle assortment — the needles it ships with are a minimum, not a supply
- Gutermann Sew-All Thread Set, 20 spools — a starter set of colors
SINGER
Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machine
Singer's Heavy Duty line has a full metal frame and, Singer says, a stronger motor than its standard machines. It sews up to 1,100 stitches a minute, which helps on long straight seams in thick fabric.
- Who it suits
- A beginner whose projects are jeans, tote bags, canvas and outdoor gear rather than quilting cotton.
- What it does well
- Pushing through denim seams and layers of canvas that make light machines stall.
- The trade-off
- "Heavy duty" means denim and canvas, not upholstery leather. And the top speed can feel fast to a nervous beginner.
Check the link for current pricing.
What else you'll need
- SCHMETZ Jeans & Denim Needles, size 100/16 — a 100/16 jeans needle is what actually gets through denim seams; the machine alone will not
- Gutermann Sew-All Thread Set, 20 spools — all-purpose thread for everyday seams
- Clover Wonder Clips, 50 pack — pins struggle through thick layers; clips do not
Janome
HD3000 Heavy-Duty Sewing Machine with Hard Case
A mechanical machine with a heavy-duty aluminum frame and adjustable presser foot pressure. It has fewer stitches than the others, but the aluminum frame is built for long service, and it comes with a hard case.
- Who it suits
- A beginner who would rather buy one solid machine than upgrade later, and who does not need decorative stitches.
- What it does well
- Light to heavy fabrics, with presser foot pressure you can adjust to suit each, and a frame built for years of use.
- The trade-off
- It costs more than the CS7000X but has only 18 stitches and no screen. You pay for the build, not the features.

What else you'll need
- SCHMETZ Universal Sewing Machine Needles, 30-needle assortment — universal needles in four sizes
- SCHMETZ Jeans & Denim Needles, size 100/16 — for the denim this machine handles well
- Gutermann Sew-All Thread Set, 20 spools — a starter set of colors

Is it worth waiting for Black Friday?
Yes, wait.
If you can wait until Black Friday on November 27, wait. Entry-level Brother machines have been marked down in past Thanksgiving weeks; deal trackers logged one on November 22 last year. But skip "bundles" padded with cheap thread just because the total looks bigger. If you need a machine for a class that starts sooner, buy now: the CS7000X is good value at its usual price.
Buying for someone else?
The safest pick at each budget: the one least likely to be wrong for them.
-
Smallest budget

-
Biggest budget
Janome HD3000 Heavy-Duty Sewing Machine with Hard Case
For someone you know will keep sewing. Only give it if they do not need fancy stitches.
How these picks were chosen
These four were chosen from machines commonly recommended to US beginners. Each covers a different situation: the default, a budget machine, one for thick fabric, and one built to last. They are compared on manufacturer specifications and on recurring strengths and faults in independent reviews and owner reports. None was used hands-on for this guide; the picks are research-based, not our own testing. Scores are out of 10.
